THE TRUTH ABOUT GENERATIONAL WEALTH - Lessons Learnt fromThe Bola Sol Show

I recently attended The Bola Sol Show with my mum, and it’s safe to say — I left changed! It was one of those rare experiences that not only affirms what you already believe but challenges you to go deeper. The conversation on generational wealth wasn't just about money. It was about mindset, sacrifice, healing, and community.

Here are some powerful lessons I took away:

“Wanna build wealth? What are you sacrificing?”

That question hit me like a brick. In a world obsessed with convenience and “soft life” aesthetics, this reminded me that building anything meaningful requires intentional sacrifice. Time, comfort, ego something's got to give.

When I got my car, a 2018 Nissan Juke some of my friends and family playfully mocked me:“Ahah, big girl like you should be buying a Benz!”

The truth is, I would’ve loved to and could most likely afford it but at what expense? I needed a car that could get me from A to Z and carry all my load. That was the priority.

I also moved back into my mum’s house with my daughter. Lord, anyone who has an African mother can imagine what that is like from the sly comments to the smell of stockfish burning my nostrils in the middle of the night... 😅 But let me tell you being able to save thousands of pounds a month is well worth it.

Short-term sacrifice. Long-term gain.

There’s no shame in staying at home or taking the slower route if it means setting yourself up well. It’s strategy not failure. There’s strength in staying grounded until you’re truly ready to build. When you worry more about outside perception than your actual needs, it’s a downhill road to “keeping up with the Joneses.” But my last name isn’t Jones — it’s Ogunlana. Let’s all stay in our financial lanes.

Perfection is a trap

Bola said something that really resonated: If you walk into every space acting like you know it all, you leave no room to learn.

That was such a needed reminder. Humility is wealth. Nobody likes a little Miss Know-It-All. Honestly, growth begins where performance ends.

Expression is the opposite of depression

One of the most profound moments was when Yemi Penn said suppression is one of the biggest blocks to success. Woah. So often, we’re told to “keep it together” — but real healing and progress come from speaking, feeling, and processing.

Generational wealth isn’t just financial. It's emotional, spiritual, and relational too. We carry stories, wounds, and wisdom passed down from our families. The real power is in consciously choosing what to break… and what to preserve.

Let’s move our bodies, release negative energy, and realign mind, body, and soul.

I’ve started expressing myself through designing again, and I’m considering taking up dance classes (even though I have absolutely no rhythm, so let’s see how that goes 😂).

What are you going to do to express yourself in this season?

Ownership matters

It should feel uncomfortable not owning anything. Not from a place of pressure — but from purpose. Even small ownership (property, business, intellectual property) is a seed.

Community is wealth too

Bola’s reminder that “we’ve become too individualistic, not capitalistic” really struck me. Somewhere along the line, we started glorifying hyper-independence — but wealth, in its truest form, has always been communal.

Generational wealth also looks like knowing people who can help your kids get internships, jobs, funding, or mentorship. It’s building a village that outlives you.

Who are you building with? A sibling, a friend or a spouse?

30% of something > 100% of nothing

We often think we need to do it all alone to have full control but that’s ego talking. Be willing to collaborate. Having a slice of something valuable beats owning all of something that’s going nowhere.

There was a time when having money left at the end of the month felt impossible to me. That moment of reflection reminded me how far I’ve come and how much further I want to go. The Bola Sol Show wasn’t just an event. It was a mirror, a challenge, and a blessing. And I’m so glad I got to share it with my mum (literally had to beg her to come!). This journey of building generational wealth isn’t just mine — it’s ours.
